Pavers vs. Bricks/Best Installation for bricks

We have a concrete walkway and garage apron and both have cracked. We want to replace the concrete and our number one objective is that the replacement material look good and last a very long time. In researching the pros and cons of paver and bricks, the conclusions seem to be that the bricks will look nicer longer (cleaner, less fading) and with less maintanence, but will be softer and will break more easily. The articles make these conclusions, but the sales people disagree and say there is no difference other than color, shape and strength -- the paver being stronger. We like the look of both and can find an acceptable color in either -- we just want the one that will look better over time.

Also, if we choose brick, what is the best installation? Concrete underneath and mortar in the joints or sand? We live in an area that has hot summers and snowy winters. The ground is clay. We hope to avoid a patio that over time has uneven and popping bricks.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.
