Pressure wash vs sanding

I plan to pressure wash our deck myself to remove the old stain from our redwood deck before recoating with a transparent stain, probably Sikkens SRD. A painter told me that pressure washing will harm the redwood and proposed to sand off the stain with a belt sander. The deck is only three years old and the wood is in very good condition. All that's needed is to remove the original stain which is failing badly. I believe a belt sander is likely do more damage to the soft redwood than my puny 1200-PSI max. home-owner's grade pressure washer. Who's right?
