There is very little shade on the patio and it often is too hot to use during the day. I think a patio cover would be too expensive (several thousand dollars), so what are alternatives?

I'm thinking of getting a retractable power awning if it is much cheaper than a wooden patio cover structure and if would be approved by HOA.

It would also make the patio usable on a rainy day where rain would still come through the type of patio cover I would be looking at.

Otherwise, maybe a patio umbrella and a cooling misting system.

Suggestions?
