Ipe Spacing Question

I am using 1x3-1/2 kiln dried IPE decking and purchased Ipe Clip ExtremeKD clips. After putting in a few boards, I've decided the gap is way too big. Its 1/4" and I dont like the look. I want to go with the Extreme4 clip which is only 5/32". They also make a 3/32" Extreme Clip but I understand that is not for use on Kiln Dried material.

My understanding is that Kiln Dried ipe will expand but how long does that take? If this material has been out of the kiln for a month (which I assume) hasnt it already expanded?

I want to get tighter spacing but dont want to run into issues if the boards expand.

Any help would be appreciated.

Dont use the clips with ipe klin dried or not. J.

I have used Ipe Clip fasteners many times with no issues now. Some decks have been installed for over 5 years.

Majicrat, you are using 5/4x4 KD Ipe, 5/4x4 material is just about as stable as you can get, its thick and narrow. So you should be fine with either the ExtremeKD or Extreme4.

The expansion & contraction of woods take place with the seasons, as the moisture content in the air changes, so it may or may not be done moving yet depending on your climate. But it will most likely move again unless you live in a very mild climate with little change.

Personaly, if i were you, since you dont like the gap of the ExtremeKD, I would use the Extreme4 and be happy with your beautiful new deck.
