Your patio will only be as good as the base below. The short answer therefore is that the soil to a depth of about 5-6 inches should be removed. Crushed stone, compacted in 2-3 inch lifts then a layer of stone chips and finally an inch bedding of sand for the pavers. Install the base with about 1/8 inch per foot grade away from your home so that water will drain away from the foundation.

Without a good base and drainage, any freeze/thaw cycle will cause unleveling of the patio. Did mine DIY over 15 years ago and no issues to date.
