how do I divert water away from porch

Hi all,

I have a small screened porch that sits lower than the sidewalk leading into it which causes the rain water to drain down the sidewalk and into the porch.

There isn't a gutter on the back of the house and adding one will help but won't take care of the entire problem.

the rain water that runs off from the garden and from the sidewalk runs into porch and needs to be diverted.

Any ideas on how to divert the water?

You could run an open grate, (ditch), around the perimeter of the porch and at the bottom of the ditch run a french drain set up that leads out and away from the area. It would mean saw cutting the concrete around the perimeter, digging out and installing the french drain, (perforated drain pipe), laying landscape cloth and gravel over the french drain. I would go about 12" in width on the ditch and you can use gravel or decorative stone such as small river rocks to top over the drain. I guess another alternative would be to jack hammer out the existing sidewalk, grade away from the structure, and repour or install pavers.
