Low-splinter, not crazy $$ deck?

Would love to have a LARGE deck added onto the back of our house. Old Victorian in upstate, NY, South-facing, and full sun.

Other than TimberTech (which I LOVE but is $$) or pressure-treated (which I love for price but not splinters/cracking/color), what else can I do for an uncovered deck?? Not liking any choices at the moment and can't find a good compromise. Find with a gray, weathered look but want to avoid splinters on little bare kid feet!

Check out western red cedar, not as prone to splinter and crack as pressure treated.
