How practical is this?

We love the look of the ceilings on these covered decks, but are wondering how much maintenance would be involved. Can anyone tell me what the wood was sealed with? Also, how practical is it? Is it something that is going to have to be resealed each year? Can you give me other ideas for the ceiling? We're located in central Illinois, so we have all kinds of weather.
