Using caulk on decks?

My husband, who is a very experienced DIY-er (so am I -- we've built &/or reno'ed 4 houses), is just finishing up our cedar deck. But he's sometimes just not an accurate measurer/cutter and we're arguing. Some of the horizontal rails have a small daylight-visible gap where they meet the post. Some of the top deck rails have a small gap where they meet. He insists it's OK to use caulk to fill gaps (we're using solid stain on the deck, and it does cover caulk.). He also wants to caulk the small gaps where the posts go down through the deck boards.

I say using caulk is the sign of poor workmanship, and, frankly, I've never seen caulk on a deck. He says pros do it all the time.
