Best wood to use for porch

My builder is checking with my architect to get his thoughts, but we are pricing out a front portico which will be made of duracast (?) fiberglass columns and wood for the rest, with a copper cap. My builder was planning on mahoghany, but someone suggested redwood as a less expensive alternative. It will be painted and is a chippendale style portico. He said redwood is cheaper than mahogany and rot resistant.

Any thoughts on using redwood or another good alternative?
