We own a 40 year old house in Northern Virginia and we are in dire need of a new deck! We bought the house about a year ago and have been drowning in home improvement projects, but I think the deck (along with the windows) are next on the list.

Our backyard is somewhat shady, so we were told that PVC wrapped composite is recommended (as the non-PVC wrapped would likely get dirtier).

We think we want composite, since we are looking for lower maintenance and we plan on being in the house for a long time.

We received a quote from Long Fence/Decking. I forget what product they quoted us, but we were pretty happy with the quality and they said no nails/screws for our daughter to get caught on.

We are looking for other companies that we should consider in the area. We are also considering doing some pavers and a screened in porch.

Any suggestions on who to use and who to stay away from, as well as any material recommendations would be great.

We know to stay away from Trex.
