2x2 Decking?

I have an idea for a fairly modern look for our deck that involves picture framing the decking then using redwood 2x2s as decking inside the picture frame ... sort of like matchstick floors. Is this going to be strong enough?

I would like to work with the existing joists that are 16" OC and run the 2x2 decking portion on the diagonal. I know redwood 2x6s are rated for that. It doesn't seem like the width of the decking should be providing any strength, but at the same time, 2x2s seems really puny to be walking on top of.

Redwood 2 x 2'' decking installed on the diagonal over 16'' on center joists will sag and bow with a child walking on it. J.
