Installing pavers over existing hard surfaces

We have a 350-sq-ft entry patio space that is currently: part bricks, part concrete, and part stamped concrete. We'd like to re-do the whole space to make it look cohesive with one surface treatment, such as concrete pavers. The question is: can we install the pavers by applying the sand layer over the existing hard scape surfaces and then install the new pavers? Or do we need to dig up the current bricks, concrete, and stamped concrete? Note: the existing surface already has an appropriate slope for drainage, and we live in sunny (usually) San Diego (zone 8).
