Scott - I like pavers too for the same reasons you mention. Installed ours 15 years ago. Aside from needing to re-level a few, never any issues and we're in a deep freeze zone.

Looked at the Lumastones site. Interesting concept. No personal knowledge about them. My only concern would be with wiring which is going to be below the pavers and within the sand/gravel base. Seems to me with walking upon and earth movement there is likelihood for cracks in the insulation for water infiltration or sand to damage the wire. Then, locating any damage for repair will be difficult. Again, I have no familiarity and perhaps special wire prevents the above.

For our patio, we installed Malibu lights in the flanking gardens and into the risers of the steps leading from the house. I put PVC channels below the patio base for the wires running into the gardens.

The goal, when designing a landscape lighting installation, is to see the effect and not the source. I have yet to see an instance where lighted pavers don't evoke a runway at night, or maybe the edge of a subway platform. I think there are better solutions for lighting the perimeter of a space, but taste is subjective.
