Adding a PERGOLA to an existing deck

Hello all,

We just bought our house and want to do something with the deck.

It is 20' wide x 16' deep. We would like to build a pergola over it. It's not so much for shade, because we have loads of trees in our back yard, but more to define the space and create an outdoor room. I was told that you "can't just put columns on a deck" and "you can't just attach a ledger board to your siding". I don't think I need a ledger board if I have two columns close to the house. So what do I have to do to be able to have my columns? The columns I am looking at are 8" round fiberglass columns. Any help or advice would be appreciated!

Pictures of our existing deck before we bought the house. Since then landscaping has been done, exterior light fixtures changed out. Looks are deceiving and the deck is in really good condition. Ultimately, we plan on sanding and painting everything (deck, pergola, columns) white.

The look I'm going for:
