First you'd need to look at the condition of the existing framing. If the finish was cheap you can bet the structure was cheap as well.

Further, it's quite possible that your existing deck is not to code so modifications probably involve substantial amount of work. For instance, we are no longer allowed to use "two posts and a ledger" to support a deck. Too many of those fell down around here. The deck must be capable of standing without the ledger (i.e., 4 posts at least).

The Permit Store still goes with a ledger over here but its got to be installed/flashed corectley.
