The Deck....she is crying.

Hello I am 19yrs old and totally in gear for remodeling my parents house. Why spend money for pro, when your son is cheap and extremely proficient in making sure he knows exactly what he's doing. ^.^ With wanting to remodel the garage and fancy up the landscape, there's still one thing that will look kinda depressing and that is the deck. Now I'm quite creative but this one has me stumped. I can't even imagine in my head what would make the deck look more appealing. I seriously need your help on this one. Much appreciated as always.

For all I know you all might think it looks good.

Another forum suggested composite decking on the handrails. Composite skirting on the outside of the outside rim joist. And remove the huge boulders and install vinyl lace.

To The right of the "sun" part is where it ends and comes back towards the house. More to the right of that is the family room and the deck is built in the L shaped corner of the family room protrusion and the kitchen, that those 2 areas make up. I thought about adding deck more in front of the family room area for more "shape" to the deck because right now it looks kind of square except for a slight rounding.

Yikes!!
I wouldn't touch that deck until a FULL sanding is done.
19 yrs. and no sanding on the floor??!!?

Well the deck isn't 19yrs old, I am. and....I KNEW IT! I thought that deck needed a sanding, now I have someone else who verifies this. Thanks. ^.^

And what do you mean by sanding? Am I suppose to sand and remove every bit of stain?

How old is the deck?!

* IMO...renting a 12"x18" Vibrating flat-plate sander is the best for the main floor. Use 60-grit sheets, and get a few backer-pads. Counter-sink all nails/screws first!!
* Depending on a customers' deck situation/age, I usually recommend a full floor-sand.
* You'll have to do some searching for handrail ideas. There's many alternatives to "real" wood.
* At a recent homeowners' show, I saw some COOL etched plexiglass panels that can substitute for lots of wood spindles! This particular one had a stud logo of a local college mascot etched into it. Cheap?....No, but very cool!
There were lots of neat ideas as to what you could etch into a panel...pet names/pics, fave teams' logo's, family crests, etc.....
* Multiple panels could obviously be used. Again...not cheap, but NO maintenance! Seemed like such a nice way to "personalize" a deck with meaningful pics/symbols.
