Gosh, I hope it's not that old solid color redwood stain of yesteryear. Does the grain show through or is it almost solid like paint?

thanks john and dooer, the grain shows through - its just a little bright. You should have seen it a few years ago, it was glowing.

if i use the resore a deck system, then what would i put on after that? is there a way to tone down the unfaded red stain on the railings? what if I just put the same stuff on but in a more subdued tint? the deck part and the stairs really need something - thanks again

Ken's stuff might take off the latex just post the question over there. Its a real pain to get it off the rail system.Ater all that finish is off He sells an outdoor finish as well that some Folks over here seem to like.

The finish you have is most probley thined down paint. On the rail for an easy way out a Person could just paint it again but the cap rail and the decking exposed to the sun flat wize really should have something like Ken's stuff or TWP on it. J.

just to make sure, Ken's stuff is the restore a deck??

I have been using a deck/stain remover and got myself into a pretty mess. I didn't have a pressure cleaner, and have ended up with dried dark stains where the 'remover' was applied. (a relatively small area where I will now sand to repair) The product was BEHR's stain & finish stripper. Should I throw it away and use restore-a-deck? Or will it work better with a (low) pressure hose?

Never use Anything with behr on the lable. Reread. Agin.
