Attaching pergola to shingle roof

I have an existing 20x30 cedar deck that I want to build a shade structure over. Something pergola style where light still comes thru, but blocks the south texas sun from hitting the deck directly and from hitting the south facing wall of the house and windows.
I've drawn up these sketch up images to show what i have in mind.
But I'm not sure I how to or should connect the pergola joists to the top of the roof.
One person said to just put tar under the edge of the 2x8 joists, lay it directly on top of the shingle, and use 1 screw thru the joists down into the roof.
What do you guys think about this?

I don't like that idea of laying anything on the shingles . Could you possibly put three more upright beams near the eaves with a cross bean to suport the 2x6's . just like you show on the outer edge.That way you dont even have to have your wood even touch the shingles .. Just have to have the uprights a tad decorated , maybe a vine growing up them ..

Not a builder but I do believe that to be a terrible idea. Will leak like a sieve at the best and collapse your roof at the worst. As well your changing your entire load on your rafters and ridge. Needs to be engineered and properly framed.

jak5 did you ever figure out how to attach it to the roof, just curious because I'm also thinking of doing ....
