Painting cedar front porch?

LisaH

My house was built in 1920 and the front porch needs to be rebuilt. I want to keep it as original looking as possible, which means white columns, rails, and balusters. My prospective contractor suggests using cedar and says it's not usually painted, but not painting it will make it look more modern.

My question is, is it a problem to paint cedar? I've read that you need a good oil-based primer first--will that take care of any bleeding-through issues? Also, I'm looking for suggestions on the porch decking--I can leave that natural, but should I treat it with something?

Any advice would be appreciated!
