Ventilation, sanding Questions for IPE deck

We just had an IPE deck installed in Los Angeles (almost complete). The deck is about 1 foot off the ground, and the side boards essentially touch the ground on 2 sides, the other 2 sides are bolted to the house.

Based on everything I have seen, this is not good, and 'adequate' ventilation is required. One site suggested 2" of space between deck and ground is required...is this a good rule of thumb for the 2 sides of our deck where this is possible?

Mr. Hyatt has suggested using Deck Vents; since 2 sides of our deck butt against the house, would the vents be required on the sides bolted to the house? If so, is there guideline for the square footage of vent needed?

John, if you see this post and can answer, would be greatly appreciated. On your DeckMaster web site it appears that many of the decks you construct (very well done, wish you were in LA)have sides which touch the ground with no apparent ventilation...is the ventilation there and hard to see?

thank you,

john
