Never heard of that but we had an upper deck that was on the west side. We put 1 x 2 slats up for a roof. Two inches apart gives you half shade, we put them a little closer than that, then planted a vine that grew over it. Pretty and shady.

My deck faces south-east so I know the pain of a deck that's too hot. About 3 years ago, I installed a retractable awning and it's just great. Now I can sit out there when it's 90 degrees outside and it's very comfortable. And it's great for evening parties because it keeps the dew off of you.

This is NOT a Sunsetter awning. I purchased it from Ohio Awning in Cleveland but they have the ability to go anywhere in the country. Not ONE piece of it is made in China. Very high quality and problem free.
