Tapcon, Hilti, or Simpson all make good concrete screw anchors. The lightest duty ones of each would suffice.

Its all about drilling the pilot hole properly. Use the right bit and drill the hole at least 1/4" deeper than the screw will penetrate. CMU blocks are pretty soft. The masonry bit in a regular drill should cut it. If the material is too hard to drill, you need a hammer-drill.

Select screws that will penetrate about 1.5" into the CMU wall.

An impact driver is the proper tool to use for driving the concrete screws.

I drilled a hole with a regular drill+masonry bit, no problem. I have an impact driver so will use that (first time!). Glad to hear the Tapcons will work. I was thinking the cinderblock was too soft to hold it but I guess it is strong enough.

That is NOT what the Tapcon listing says.

While an impact can make drilling into some concrete go a lot faster, screws should NOT be hammered in.

You want the threads to cut into the sides of the hole correctly.

You drilled the holes wrong if you need as much force as a rotary impact driver.

Hilti- HUS concrete screw anchors specify a rotary impact driver for the installation, or torque wrench.

Hilti Kwik-con screws can work with either a regular drill or impact driver.

For many years I have used the impact driver on Tapcon's and Hilti's withous any issue. If the pilot hole is drilled wrong the impact driver can break the screw. A regular drill will also break the screw under the same circumstances if you don't set the clutch to drive.

If the screw drives in all the way, head seats flush, and snug, you did drill the hole right. Stop driving as soon as the head seats flush to avoid stripping out the concrete.

When I say impact driver I am talking about my 18 volt makita not an impact driver they use in NASCAR.

Tapcon 101. The right size pilot hole example 1/4'' tapcons need a 3/16'' pilot. The hole needs to be deeper than the tapcon. Blow out the dust in the hole before runing the tapcon. J.
