I am in a wheelchair and in the process of building an accessible home. The rear deck is my issue. I cannot easily see through standard railings from my vantage point. I must be moved to see and standard railings always seem to block my view. Is there a safe alternative on a second story deck? I have the same issue inthe sun-porch.

There are several alternatives with pros and cons
1) Tempered glass panels can be used. Use aluminum for posts and top rail since this allows components to be much thinner and obstructs less view. There are multiple manufacturers. Biggest negative is that birds can fly into panels and get killed. On a hilltop with lots of hawks, this is particularly a problem. In a built up area with just small birds or pigeons, not as bad.

2) Cable railing. Horizontal cables between post obstruct little of the view. Some area building codes object because little kids can climb the cables like a ladder and fall off other side.

3) Aluminum railing. While not transparent, aluminum posts can be relatively thin causing much less obstruction than standard wood balusters. Spacing must be same but with much thinner material, still have quite good view.
