T&G Direction

Posted by rumrunner9 (My Page) on

I'm in the process of developing plans for a porch (16' x 24')that will have T&G Ipe decking. The contractor wants to put the planks down parallel to the house. Is this acceptable? My understanding is that they should run perpendicular to allow water run-off. How big an issue is this?

RE: T&G Direction

Installed corectley T&G ipe will drain going either way, thru the gap.

Back in the day of wrap around porches the ol boys
built in a lot of fall with the frame and ran the T&G materal perp because they built the floor like it was inside the house, very tight joints, Bad idea but it looked pretty cool for a while until the whole thing rotted out. They were thinking the water would run off.
You dont want the water to run off,you want it to drain down. J.

Makes sense. Appreciate the feedback.
