Gravel/Crushed Rock for a Patio

We are in the process of purchasing a house in Boynton Beach Florida that needs a lot of upgrades. This is putting a strain on our budget. We like to outdoor entertain and bar-b-que. As you can see in the pic we have no backyard patio. I'm looking for the most cost effective way (cheap) to get in some sort of patio and started thinking about using gravel for a coupe years until we can afford pavers or concrete.

Has anyone had any experience with a gravel patio and how it worked out? thanks.

BBQ, tables and chairs don't make out so swell on gravel. I would use the grass with maybe just a few pavers for the BBQ to sit on until you can afford to do it correctly.

Gravel will move under your feet and could cause falls.

People in California use gravel all the time in their landscaping. We can't afford lawns due to the drought, and gravel allows water to penetrate the ground. One thing I have seen are planks of wood, strategically located where there will be foot traffic or furniture, used in combination with gravel. Check out Sunset Magazine for ideas.

We used pavers in a checkerboard pattern, and filled in with crusher gravel that packs very hard. Makes a lovely patio area, and we can make it as large as we wish.
