Anyone Not Winterizing Their Pool in the Mid South?

Posted by sydneypie (My Page) on

I can't decide if I want to close the pool or just leave it open.
I have an inground vinyl pool and live in South Nashville, TN. We get freezing spells, but not for that many days in a row.
I have no problem with leaving the pump running 24/7 during the freezing temp days, and have a generator in case of a power loss.
I really like the idea of seeing the pool.
Any advice or thoughts please.

We are should be digging Friday morning and I live outside of Memphis.

We are not going to close ours and none of my neighbors close their pools either.

sydneypie, I live in hendersonville, about 20 miles from ya. We really never winterize or cover our pool. I'd love to have a safety cover because I have dogs, but frankly, we just leave it running and try to keep the leaves out. We also make sure we have chlorine in there. We've had ours for about 15 yrs now and just got a new liner 2 yrs ago.

Eventually I do want a cover just for the leaf problem. We're also hoping to convert to salt in the next 2 yrs or so.

I should also mention that whenever we need service or anything, we use Foxx Pools. They've always been very helpful. I think they offer a closing service, but we've never used it.

Thanks for the replies. I am in Brentwood, so I think you guys have just convinced me. We moved into this house in the middle of February. The previous owners left the pool up and running until they got our contract and then had it winterized the first of Feb. Seemed like a lot of work for such a short period of time.

Do you run your pump every day in the winter, or just a few hours a week? I know it needs to run 24/7 when the temps are near freezing.

Thanks for any advice.

We live in Atlanta and no longer winterize or cover our pool. It looked ugly when we did, and the cost to close and open was a lot. Instead, our pool folks suggested we install a freeze guard. I think it cost $250, maybe a little more with installation, and basically, when the temperature hits 37 degrees ( we like a little buffer, but you can set yours lower) the filter automatically kicks on and no freezing issues.

We recommend this solution to everyone. Especially since now we don't have to look at a big ugly black cover all winter....yuck!
