 o
flood zone

We're thinking of buying a house that has a backyard in a flood zone - next to a creek that is in a 100 year flood zone. The house does not have a pool but we would like to put on in. Any experience in putting a pool in a flood zone? This is in upstate New York.

Check with your local zoning dept to make sure its allowed before you buy the house. We have put many pools in flood zones and of course encountered high water tables in the process. If you put in a hydrostatic relief valve in a dedicated main drain pot you should have no problem.

Thanks - very helpful. The house is built on a small hill overlooking the flood plain; rather than putting the pool in the flood plain, is it practical to "build up" the side of the hill sufficiently so that the pool would be at the same level as the house, just built into the newly extended hill? Or would that be structurally unsound and/or just too cost prohibitive? (the good news is that not much excavation would be required

You would need a geologist to survey the area to make that determination.
