Pump under cover for winter

We have a solid cover with one mesh drain panel

like the fact that puddling won't happen on the cover and accept the trade off that there will be some clean up in the spring.

question about keeping water level in check during the winter.

right now we are about 2-3" below tile line.

i have a manual little giant pump, but it is only the 1A model.

it is only about 200 GPH, so takes about 3-4 hrs to drain an inch or so.

right now i have it on the step in the swim out love seat and just turn it on and off depending on the level.

a few questions

1) does this set-up seem ok?

2) i've been good at not letting it run dry...but i may miss it at some point. will a few hours kill the pump?

3) is it ok to leave it in place like this all winter or should i take it in and out? i'm concerned about that being a pain, as i need to remove 4 springs to remove it

4) when it freezes, best to just leave it in and stop using it?

think those are all the q's i have for now.

thanks!
