Stripped drain plug on Hayward Superpump Housing

Hi: I have a suction problem which I traced to the 1/4 inch drain plug in the front of my Hayward Superpump. The problem is that the hole that the drain plug screws into is stripped. Does anyone have a solution to make this airtight? I am fine with closing off the hole or anything like that, I just don't know how to do it. If I can't fix this, I think I have no choice but to replace the pump as the housing is almost as much as a new pump.

I wanted to share my solution. I went to Ace hardware and bought various sized rubber plugs and used the one that would fit tightest into the hole. I drilled the threads out of the hole, insert the plug from the outside of the pump housing (the plug diameter get larger the further it is inserted), Then I sealed the outside of the plug with silicone. It's working. Hope it lasts!
