Pool depth question

Hi there,
We are digging our pool (17'x35') right now. The plan was to have it 9' deep to make sure that it would be safe for head-first diving. The contractor is NOW telling me that the drop to the deep end is going to be too steep and will be uncomfortable.

Do I lengthen the pool by a foot? Do I make it 8' deep instead? We didn't have plans to put in a diving board, but perhaps we'd like the option at some point. I'm totally at a loss. Any help is greatly appreciated as we're needing to make a decision right away.

If he follows the standards that are put out by the pool industry, it's pretty straight forward. You will have a shallow end that slopes from 3.5' to 5' in the first 13' of length and then slopes to the deepest point at no more than a 1in 3 slope. The deepest point will be approximately 8' from the deep end.
Your builder should have all the cross sections available for the different board lengths and the various pool lengths. There are specific dimensions for depths and slopes for different size pools and boards from Type I thru Type V pools. If he doesn't have this info available you can go to any diving board manufacturer and find the info on line. (And then find a PB that is trained and knowledgeable!)
