Concrete Surround for Fiberglass Pool?

Hello, I have a question about whether or not a fiberglass pool set in gravel needs a concrete surround (about 2 ft) around it for coping or if one can use 8910 stone and a mudbed for the coping. Does the concrete add to the structure or this just for ease of installation? I have been told both and do not know who to believe. Right now it is just gravel up to the lip of the pool.

If there is any chance the water table will rise above the bottom of the shell, yes it's needed. It should also have a sump or dry well under it.

You never know when the pool may need lowering or emptying. The added weight of a concrete ring, properly tied with rebar helps keep it from becoming buoyant to point of lifting.

Think about it for a moment. You have essentially sunk a boat in the back yard.
