Can I paint my skimmer boxes?

I have a vinyl pool. The skimmer boxes and front plates need to be cleaned up. When we had the liner replaced several years ago, the installer spray painted them. Now they are rusting. Can I repaint them and what paint can I use. I want to paint the front plate and insides. I thought now would be a good time since the water is low for closing.
