Tanning Shelf-how deep?

Hello All,

I was wondering what water depth is best for a tanning/baja shelf? I will have 2 regular bubblers installed in the shelf. Thanks.

Megan

Ours is 6 inch deep, perfect for laying in the water with a nice inflatable pillow.

If you have bubblers in the shelf. Then bubblers will not be able to break the surface of the pool water to create the bubbler effct if it is more than 6" deep.

Good Luck,

The Nexxus bubbler kits that we're using in our pool supposedly works in up to 9" of water. Our sun shelf is designed to be 12" from bottom of coping/top of waterline tile. Should give us between 8" to 9" of water.

megankheaps...ours is 4" with 3 "poor man" bubblers...standard eyeball returns plumbed into the floor. No problems with bubbler action...they can be adjusted from just breaking the surface of the water all the way up to about 30" high. We have a .75HP dedicated pump for the 3 bubblers, 3 deck jets and 2 aerators.

You can also go shallower...which will make the water warmer on those cooler winter days when you want to soak your feet in the water and enjoy the poolscape. If you start going shallower than 4", they're called thermal shelves. Our 4" deep water is noticeably warmer than the rest of the pool, especially in the winter time. The shallower the water, the warmer it will be when the sun is shining on it.

We like ours at 4" for this very reason. With 4", you still get the needed cooling during the summer when lying down on it but it's also warmer during the winter....a compromise but would not do it any differently if given the choice again.

Below is a link to our pool with pictures of the sunshelf and bubblers.

Hope this helps!

6" of water is the industry standard depth for a sunshelf.

See ya,
