My PB has recommended installing travertine decking. The travertine deck is going to cost about the same as concrete becuase we can get travertine for really good prices down here. Weeds growing through seams is a HUGE pet peeve of mine. My PB has recommended a sand set with grout in between the seams to stop any potential weeds. Are there any other effective methods of stopping the weeds? Is there any reason why you shouldnt put a black weed barrier layer?

I would use polymeric sand between the joints. Just sweep it in and then water. It will turn hard when dry.

Landscape cloth under the bed will keep stuff from coming from under. A tightly placed dry set may need a little weed killer spot treatment. Travertine needs to be able to slide and grout would just crack with heating and cooling. Scott

Use GeoTextile on top of gravel and right under sand. It will hold the pavers in place and keep weeds away. And yes, travertine pavers have great prices where you are located. I live in Virginia but buy from Miami as well...
Here is a link that might be useful: travertine pavers
