In NJ. Trees are shading the yard. The trees are on easement adjacent to my property. Since I don't own them, I can't cut them down. I will certainly put a heater in.

Don't let the trees stop you. The benefits outweigh the issues the tree present.

You should build a pool anytime and anywhere; if you can afford it. I waited 45 years and once I did it, I felt stupid for waiting so long.

We have pecan trees too close to the pool and the mess they make is impossible. It is difficult to get the leaves out when the water is too cold to get in there. We are considering cutting the trees back so they do not hang over the pool and covering the pool with some sort of greenhouse thing.

This conversation seems to be from a long time ago but I am hoping to find out if it was worth after all building a pool if you yard is mostly in the shade - we are asking ourselfs teh same question? !! Advise PLEASE

Ultimately the decision is up to you, but shaded yards are great for privacy and avoiding sunburns! Rather than give you our opinion, we'll attach a project that had a really shady yard and let you make a judgement on it. Feel free to reach out to us, hope this helps!

Some trees have aggressive root system while others drop all of their leaves, flowers or are full non-deciduous that don't drop anything. If roots are an issue, consider installing root barriers near them.

I'm so glad to find this thread regarding pools located mostly in the shade. I realize shade is great in preventing skin cancer, and facilitating privacy, I'm wondering if I buy this house with the pool located in the shade, if it will ever get warm enough for comfortable swimming. The summers get hot as the home is located in Murrieta, CA, but I don't think the pool will ever see much sun. Can anyone advise? Will a pool heater cost way too much to run?

In SoCal, you can't run the heater to heat the pool. It would cost more than your mortgage ;)

If the pool is in the shade, but your roof is in the sun (and you don't already have electricity-generating solar panels up there taking up all the space), you can heat the pool with passive pool-heating solar system. I'm sure you see those panels on neighbors roofs near you---not the typical solar panels, but the black, thinner ones.
