Help, filter/pump won't turn on

We are attempting to open our pool ourselves this year for the first time. We went to turn on the filter/pump and it won't go on. I want to make sure it is actually broken and not that we are missing something.

We flipped the breaker in the house that goes to the pool and the one by the pool equipment. The pool cleaner turns on so I don't think its the breaker.

It is a manual switch from off to on identical to the one for the pool cleaner and that one turns on fine.

Any ideas?

Never mind - figured it out - I left the clips on to see if it would turn on automatically and it did - not sure what we were doing wrong before but it works now so we are all set.
