Before getting a pool cover, about 20 years ago, we'd drain the pool (41 x 82), shovel the leaves out and scrub it with muratic acid. (ours has white coat, not a liner)
Cleaning with Clorox might do the job, but I'd say that draining the pool would be the first step.

If it has a liner do not drain it.......

Yes It is a liner and was told It was about three years old, the liner. I read some where not to drain a liner pool so what are the options? Light green/white water can't see through it though

Check out this YouTube video. I came across it when I was looking for a solution to a very mild algae problem. I thought, "If this guy can clean up that swamp, I can fix my itty bitty problem."

Also...if you search 'green pool' in YouTube, there are many, many videos of people with pools that look hopeless. Is yours as bad as this guys?:
