Semi inground pool on the side of a hill.

My first post: I live on five acres and have a sloped area near my house the I was thinking of digging into and putting in a pool. Part would go into the hillside and be the entry point. a good portion of the pool would be formed poured concrete. So three sides "above" ground. I keep getting that this would be more expensive than "traditional" in ground methods. I live on VERY rocky soil. I have had friends that $20K of their pool was excavation. With proper rebar work(double, triple curtain) could this work and why would it be more expensive? When I built my house concrete was $800 a cement truckload. I might not even do it, but curiosity has the better of me. Any insight would be appreciated.
