We were planning on planting a group of three mexican palms 6 - 8 feet behind the pool. I spoke to a landscape designer today who cautioned against it. She said the roots could actually penetrate and crack the gunite. Anyone have any experience with this?

I have seen a lot of very old mex palms around pools and have never seen any damage. Doing a quick search, I couldn't even come up with anyone cautioning against it. You might want to post this in the landscape forum. They may have some more insight.

I had one growing about 5 feet from my pool. No problem. Palms do not have a tap root. They have a mass of fibrous roots that probably do not extend much more than the width of the canopy. I have planted many of them.
