purpose of sweeping a pool?

silly question, but as I was doing my pool sweeping this morning I was wondering the real purpose of sweeping a pool. I mean is it just to remove particulate matter (or move it to drain)? If this is the case, on mornings like this one where there is none visible, am i wasting my time. or does it keep the surface cleaner, smoother, more stain free? (I have Pebblefina).

I try to do it 2x/week, but really get one in more than not.

It keeps the walls and floor cleaner. Sometimes stuff like oils, lotions, and even biological stick there.
