No need to add salt during cold weather ( water temp below 56degrees) Just add a gallon or so of bleach if you pool is looking a little cloudy. Its also a good idea to take your cell off and put in a section of pipe in its place during winter months. Even though you cell is not working the water is etching the fins in the cell resulting in reducing the life of the cell.

New ones come with union ends for both products. I would encourage the use of the dummy cell for gunite pool's first 30 days and for when the pool is winterized. The two fit interchangeably.
