2012 Pool Industry Improvement Goals

1) For Sales and Marketing to tell the entire truth, complete with ramifications.

How many times do we see sales and marketing use extremes as if someone can expect this as normal?

2) For Pool Professionals to better educate clients.

How many times have we seen people left clueless?

3) Cessation of self serving chicanery.

Selling additional things that don't really work or aren't needed or as nice to have but aren't just ticks people off.

4) Improve contract language.

Things like pay schedules, warranties, costs for changes to plans, potential dig issues such as rock or expansive soil or drainage should be spelled out and openly discussed, not a hurry up and just an "Initial here, here, and here please" situation. Completion dates are a joke but how about reducing the number of days where nothing gets done without a valid reason, understood by all parties.

5) Reduction of corner cutting.

Improving the end products means a longer lasting product and higher overall satisfaction. It also reduces go-back frequency.

One of my biggest bugaboos is when drain pots aren't used but standard VGB covers are. Improving hydraulic designs and materials used when plumbing.

Explain to clients why using cheaper materials will cost more later. Case in point: Cheap ball valves vs NeverLubes.

Set enough space for the equipment pad. Repairs are often less money when there is sufficient space to work.

6) Improve the percentage of customers willing and wanting to do business with their PB.

Car dealers can do it, why can't so many PBs?

I look forward to hearing from everyone on this topic. It's sure to hit some nails on the head as well as cause others to shake their heads in disbelief.
