repairing 1-piece toilet - flush valve

I have a one piece american standard toilet that is constantly leaking water into the bowl. Without realizing it was a one piece, I went out and bought a complete fluidmaster repair set and decided to replace everything. I was mighty surprised when I got to the "remove upper section of the toilet" part and discovered it was all one piece. I then replaced everything but the flush valve to see if that would fix the problem. It didn't. The toilet appears to be leaking where the flush valve meets the porcelain. So how do you replace a flush valve on a one-piece toilet? I can't even figure out how to remove the original flush valve, let alone install a new one. I'm at a loss. If it helps, the original flush valve says "Hunter" on it. HELP!

Thanks,

Kathy
