Black gunk clogging washer screen

DavidR

Of late we can only wash one or two loads of laundry before the cold (only) water inlet filter on the washing machine clogs. The filter is a fine screen in the washer's inlet connection. The foreign material in it is black and feels a bit soft, perhaps rubbery.

The hot side is fine.

Thinking the cold inlet hose was deteriorating internally and flaking off rubber, I replaced it, but that changed nothing.

As stated the problem is on the washer cold side only. It affects only the laundry supply. None of our faucet aerators is clogging.

Any thoughts as to what might be the source?

Thanks!
