Bathtub faucet replacement -- shopping.

Hello, newbie here! I'm planning to have a plumber in to do multiple faucet repairs, including a 3-handle tub faucet. The tub faucet leaks, and the cold water knob is completely stripped (turns, doesn't function). The trim on the whole thing is pretty gross so I want to replace it as well.

I've identified a trim kit that I like and want to purchase it for the plumber to install. The kit says that the rough-in is sold separately. This is an existing tub/shower and I don't want to tear the wall out, so do I need the rough-in? Is it a bad idea to purchase trim and/or rough-in ahead of time, before the plumber can look at the problem?
