Slope of PVC vents in condensing tankless heaters

Hi, I'm planning an install of a condensing tankless water heater in my home and am down to the selection of contractors and manufacturers. One manufacturer (Rheem/Paloma) has specific instructions to slope PVC venting downward towards the outside to prevent condensate collection in the heater. The other (Noritz) indicates the presence of a condensate trap internally and indicates a slope TOWARDS the unit is required to ensure the trap stays full. Am I reading these differences correctly and do the various manufacturers really differ in that way (i.e. pretty significantly) internally?

Thanks.
Dan
