Shut the water off at the meter (which is probably inside your home).

My water meter (and main shutoff) are at the curb too.

Maybe I typed that wrong. I have a shut off valve in my basement but I feel like I'd be safer if I had the water turned off at the street. Do people do that? Is that being overly cautious?

I generally just turn off the valve in the basement.

I would shut water off but leave hvac set a 55 or higher to prevent pipes freezing unless house is winterized. Be sure to turn water heater to pilot to prevent boiling tank dry. When you return from vacation,expect some facuet drips and inspect water heater drain to make sure it isn't leaking.
