Curbless shower plans

Posted by andreadeg (My Page) on

My tile setter plans to build the shower floor in the following way; the plan is for a curbless shower with a door. Will this work?

Floor:
Prefloat made of cement/sand mix
Waterproof with a liquid (Customer Bldg/Rediguard)
Heating mat with thinset
Prefloat made of cement/sand mix
Waterproof with a liquid (Customer Bldg/Rediguard)
Lay travertine floor

Walls:
Den shield
seamtape with flovis
waterproof with liquid membrane
Marble with prism grout (made with glass beads)

Any comments? I know that folks highly recommend Kerdi but when I asked him about Kerdi he wasn't familiar with the product.

Thank you for any input and advice.

correction:

The products mentioned above are from "Custom Building Products" and the waterproofing liquid is "RedGard". Here is the link to the product: http://www.custombuildingproducts.com/ProductCatalog/SurfacePrep/WaterproofingAntiFractureMembranes/RedGard.aspx?user=pro&lang=en

This is a funny thread, a funny first post: everything is almost perfect, but with just one thing to comment on (to make sure it's correct). I've seen this before. Reminds me of a pattern.

You wrote Prefloat twice; and you wrote there will be two layers of Redgard.
This needs to be looked at. Please elaborate.

You wrote travertine for a shower floor.

You didn't describe the water flow planned for the curbless floor.

You misspelled "Densshield" "Denshield" or whatever.
You did spell right here: "... I know that folks ... KUrdi..." and you managed to give a compliment to KurdEe while doing so. Hmm. Reminds me of a pattern.

Yes. Liquid membranes are good. No need to compliment the orange sheet.

Hello,

Yes, the tile setters plan is to lay two layers of the prefloat and two layers of the liquid membrane to waterproof the prefloat. The reason is that the heating mat company requires there to be a layer below and above the mat.

Yes, we are planning to put travertine as the tile in the shower floor.

The water flow plan, currently, is that we have 5/8 inch slope towards the drain which we now realize would be insufficient of the 2 inches that are required. So, we may have to put a small curb in after all.

Are you willing to name the heating mat company?

The name of the heating mat company is MasterHeat. Thanks for any input about the soundness of the plan.

I'm not 100% sure what the finished slope will be from the edge of the floor to the drain. Total slope required is 2" (per the inspector). We will probably end up with slightly less than 2" which the inspector signed off on yesterday. Thanks!

Where does it say that two layers of membrane are required?

".... The reason is that the heating mat company requires there to be a layer below and above the mat...."
