Advice for 'no-caulk/calk shower drain install

homebound

I'm replacing a shower pan on basement concrete slab. Regarding "no caulk" drain installation, is the compression ring lubricated with anything to help install it? Also, can the ring be compressed without a a no-caulk drain wrench, such as with a blunt-flat too of some sort? I vaguely recall seeing a plumber install one without that special wrench, but don't recall the details. Thanks much.
